Insider y Forastero

By Jasmine Smith and Holly Houlton

March 2019- Exhibited at the Outsider exhibition in NewYork

‘The Insider y el Forastero’ explores both components of the photography theme as a body of work created for the New York exhibition, ‘Outsider’ in March 2019. The two photographers are outsiders to the Spanish community due to the language barrier. Additionally, they are insiders to the urban architecture of Madrid, as they live in these local areas and this is a focal subject, symbolic of their Erasmus experiences. The purposefully chosen models are part of this insider Erasmus community, to document all participants’ experiences. This work is an example of Solomon-Godeau analogy of how: “The thing itself is never just out there in the world waiting to be framed by the [photographer]…it is something dynamically produced in the act of representation and reception” (n.d). Smith uses expired film for this project passed down to her from a close companion which adds to the authenticity of the photographic images.
